From the moment one steps into idar Jewellers on Fort Street, it becomes clear this is no ordinary jewellery store. The warm glow of gold, and the sparkle of carefully set stones create an atmosphere where artistry and heart meet.
Founder, master goldsmith and jewellery designer Idar Bergseth was born in Vancouver. As a child, his fascination with rocks grew into a lifelong passion for fine jewellery. Classically trained and mentored by master goldsmiths, Idar began handcrafting jewellery in the 1960s—an era when most jewellers turned to mass production. Drawing inspiration from West Coast surroundings, Nordic heritage, and Celtic design, Idar pioneered a distinctive style that earned international acclaim and numerous awards.
For over fifty years, the Victoria-based shop has remained a beacon of sustainability and heartfelt craftsmanship. Each handmade piece tells a story and leaves a lasting legacy.
Among many accolades, Idar’s Pirouette platinum and diamond ring earned first place at the Canadian Jeweller Magazine Awards of Excellence in 2018. That same year, his work was featured in the Vancouver Art Gallery’s Modern in the Making, honouring artists and designers who shaped modern design in British Columbia.
Today, in a world of mass production, idar’s original vision to create well designed, handmade and one of a kind pieces of jewellery made to be worn and become the heirlooms of tomorrow, stands strong. Using sustainable materials, time-honoured techniques and contemporary inspirations, results in pieces that are both meaningful and timeless.
Beyond idar’s eight signature collections—from Celtic Revival to West Coast Flora—idar remains a place where beauty is created from the heart and shared with the world.
